          Thoracic Surgery

The Department of Thoracic Surgery at Suining Central Hospital originated from the former Thoracic-cardiac Surgery, which was founded in the 1960s and managed to provide surgical treatment for tuberculosis, bronchiectasis, and lung cancer despite of the extremely unfavorable conditions at that time. With the efforts of several generations, it has now developed into a provincial key discipline and a center of medical care, teaching, and scientific research in the thoracic surgery field in central Sichuan Basin.

The department comprises two sub-specialties: minimally invasive thoracic surgery and routine thoracic surgery. It has 63 beds and is staffed by 12 doctors, among whom there are 1 chief physician,4 associate chief physicians,4 attending physicians, 1 resident, and 7 doctors received doctor's or master's degree. Over 600 operations are performed yearly including 200 cases of lung cancer and 200 esophageal cancer.

The Department of Thoracic Surgery always puts people first and has determined its directions including "Surgery-based comprehensive treatment for thoracic tumors" and "Minimally invasive thoracic surgery". It currently carries out a variety of routine thoracic operations such as radical operations for lung cancer, esophageal cancer, and mediastinal tumors, as well as difficult and complex thoracic operations such as double sleeve lobectomy, intrapericardial pneumonectomy, lung volume reduction, bronchial sleeve resection, pulmonary arterioplasty, esophageal cancer excision, chest wall reconstruction after giant chest wall tumor resection, etc.

The department is one of the specialties which carry out minimally invasive thoracic surgery earlier in Sichuan. At present, it routinely carries out various endoscopic operations including thoracoscopic pulmonary lobectomy, thoracoscopic pulmonary segmentectomy, thoracoscopic resection of esophageal leiomyoma, endoscopic hiatal hernia repair, NUSS procedure for pectus excavatum, totally endoscopic radical resection of esophageal carcinoma, and bronchopleural fistula treatment under fiberoptic bronchoscope, etc. Its areas of expertise also include microwave radiofrequency ablation of malignant lesions in lung and operative treatment of various thoracic traumas.

As an ancient poem says, "Long as the way is, I will pursue the truth in heaven and earth." With exquisite clinical skills and supports from the hospital, we will forge ahead to build a national class diagnosis and treatment center for thoracic diseases.
